The job takes something you don’t get back on your day off
Houston has one of the largest medical workforces in the world. The Texas Medical Center alone employs more than a hundred thousand people, and a lot of them are running on empty. Twelve-hour shifts that turn into fourteen. Patients who die. Families who scream. Staffing that never recovered. A system that asks you to care deeply and then punishes you for it with charting.
You know the vocabulary: burnout, compassion fatigue, moral injury, secondary trauma. Knowing the words doesn’t stop them from happening to you.
What therapy for healthcare workers looks like here
I work with hospital and clinic staff across the Houston area. Sessions are online and scheduled around your rotation, which is the only way most of you could do this at all. We usually work on:
- The trauma that came from the job. A specific death, a code that went wrong, a violent patient, the pandemic years. This is handled the same careful way as any trauma therapy in Houston, with stability first.
- Anxiety that started at work and followed you home. Racing thoughts before a shift, dread, panic in the parking garage. See how I treat anxiety in Houston.
- Burnout and the numbness that comes with it (more on burnout therapy in Houston). Not “self-care tips.” An honest look at what you can change, what you can’t, and how to stay a person inside a job that flattens people.
- Moral injury. The gap between the care you know your patients need and what you’re able to give them, and the shame that comes from that gap even though it isn’t yours.
- The relationships at home that absorb the fallout.
Why online works for shift work
Nobody with a rotating schedule keeps a standing 4 p.m. Tuesday appointment for long. Online sessions mean you can meet from home after a night shift, from your car before a day shift, or on a day off without driving back toward the Medical Center. If you need to move a session because of a mandatory extra shift, we move it.
