Between who you were and who you’re becoming
There’s a particular kind of disorientation that comes with a major life change. The old roles don’t fit anymore. The new ones aren’t comfortable yet. You may be going through the motions of a life that looks fine from the outside while feeling like a stranger in it.
Transitions I regularly work with:
- Career: a layoff, a career change, a promotion that changed everything, leaving a field you built your identity on. Houston’s energy sector produces a lot of these.
- Relationships: divorce, separation, the end of a long partnership, starting over in midlife
- Family roles: becoming a parent, the empty nest, becoming a caregiver to a parent, losing a role you had for decades
- Retirement, and the loss of structure and purpose nobody warned you about
- Place: moving across the country or the world and rebuilding a life without your people nearby
- Identity: midlife, faith shifts, coming to terms with who you actually are
What we do together
Transition work is two things at once: honoring what’s ending and building what’s next.
- Grieving the old chapter. Even a good change has losses in it. We name them so they stop leaking out as irritability, sadness, or numbness.
- Steadying the present. Anxiety, poor sleep, and overwhelm are common during upheaval. We work on practical skills to get through the weeks. If anxiety is the loudest part, the anxiety therapy in Houston page describes how I treat it.
- Getting clear. What do you actually want? What are you afraid of? What decision do you keep avoiding?
- Rebuilding identity and meaning. Who are you when you’re not the job, the marriage, the parent of small kids? This is often the most valuable part.
- Taking the next step with enough confidence to act, and enough self-compassion to adjust when it doesn’t go as planned.
If your transition involves becoming a caregiver, see therapy for Houston caregivers. If it involves a death, see grief counseling in Houston.
Online, wherever the change has landed you
Sessions are by secure video across Texas. If you just moved to Houston and don’t know anyone yet, or you’re mid-divorce and your schedule is chaos, or you’re a new parent who can’t leave the house, therapy comes to you.
Book an online life transitions session, or ask Laura a question before committing to anything. Costs are on the insurance and fees page.
